Standards Introduction
ISO 9001: 2000 may be the most successful standard with over 1,000,000 Companies worldwide now registered but there are hundreds of other Standards. They can be divided into Management System or Product/Service Standards |
|
Management Systems
The main groups of Standards relate to Quality, Environment and Security.
Health and Safety is often grouped together with Quality and Environmental Systems into what is called a fully integrated system but there is no international Standard for Health and Safety because legal and regulatory requirements vary significantly because legal and regulatory requirements vary significantly between countries.
The Standard "Investors in People" originating in the UK is not an international standard published by ISO. |

Quality (ISO 9001)
ISO 9001: 2000 was originally planned to cover the requirements of all service and manufacturing organizations. However variations of ISO 9001 have been agreed to cover the specific requirements of particular industries. Examples include:
Medical Devices ISO 13485
Telecommunications TL 9100
Aerospace AS EN 9100
Automotive TS16949

Environmental (ISO 14001)

The latest update of ISO 14001 is planned to be published in December 2004

Security (ISO 17799)
With the worldwide competitive pressure, organisations are trying to reduce costs, speed up supply chain and improve service. This has encouraged the creation of partnerships and the reduction of duplicate costs within a supply chain. Examples include re-entering order details and goods-in sampling and inspection.
One way to achieve these aims has been the sharing of commercially sensitive information. However there is concern about the security of such information, once it is passed to other organizations in the supply chain.
To answer this concern well as other security issues since 9/11, ISO 17799 was developed to provide externally assessed checks of data security. Please note that ISO 17799 does not just cover the security of electronic data and therefore should not be considered only of concern of the IT or Computer specialists.

Update to Standards
Based upon use and experience, ISO Standards are routinely revised and updated. For Management System ISO's, this has been at the frequency of 5 to 8 years or so. Updates have generally been about changing the requirements (because of external developments), the emphasis and harmonisation. |
